With one act of kindness, the fate of a Manhattan family is forever altered in this New York Times–bestselling novel by the author of Rich Man, Poor Man.
The Strands are a happy family, save for the occasional financial struggle. Allen, the father, has a decent job as a schoolteacher, a lovely wife, and smart, ambitious, and compassionate children. When Allen’s daughter witnesses a mugging, she takes the victim back to the Strand home for help and a warm meal. The Strands have no clue that the man they are helping is Russell Hazen, a powerful and wealthy Wall Street lawyer. In his gratitude, Hazen offers gifts, vacations, networking opportunities—even plastic surgery. But with each reward comes baggage, and soon the Strands begin to lose sight of what matters most in life.
Bread Upon the Waters is a masterful story about the way lives interconnect, and how every good deed, no matter how selfless, comes with a price.
This ebook features an illustrated biography of Irwin Shaw including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

I bought this book because I remember it from my parent's library growing up. I have to say it is worthy read. It always amazes me how much more substantive was the writing from a few decades ago. The story is rich and the characters riveting. It is such a pleasure to read something that has not been dumbed down as the more contemporary books. Highly recommend it.Product details

Bread Upon the Waters A Novel edition by Irwin Shaw Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Long and involved story about a family whose teenage daughter does a good deed and is rewarded by the constant and very generous attention of a wealthy and powerful attorney who longs to be part of a functioning family. There is an intriguing character, a Puerto Rican boy who is well-read, despite coming from a lower-class neighborhood and a dysfunctional family. I'd say that there are two take-aways from the book one too much generosity can be life-changing and not always in a good way; two sometimes a person, in this case, Jesus Romero, has decided that he cannot rise above his street-wise background, no matter how hard his benefactors try to help him. That said, the ending was unrewarding, at least to me, and I wouldn't read the book again.
Bread Upon the Waters A Novel is by Irwin Shaw. I found it amazing that this book was written in 1981m because it is so contemporary in spirit. It is well-written; but comes across as dull and boring. I generally don’t find myself hoping a book will end soon; but I felt while reading this one.
This book is about a dysfunctional family who hits a streak of good luck. The Strands are a normal middle- class family of five. Allen is a school teacher and Leslie is a music teacher and gives private lessons. The eldest daughter, Eleanor, has her job in computers and her own apartment. She is planning a get-away with her boyfriend to Greece. Jimmy is a musician- wannabe. He spends evenings at various bars listening to or performing. The youngest, Caroline, is in high school and plays tennis. Caroline helps Mr. Hazen, a millionaire, when he is attacked in the park. She takes him home where her family takes care of him because it is the right thing to do.
Grateful for what they have unselfishly done, Mr. Hazen begins to take an interest in their lives and attempts to make them much easier to live in. However, they fail to see that the gifts he gives them, open themselves to being beholden to him. Everything comes with a price. What will their price be?
I didn't like this book. It was slow and laborious to read.
It is remarkable that a book published in 1981 can seem so fresh, so timely in 2018. Bread Upon the Waters is something of a family saga that is rooted in New York City. Only a chance encounter with a wealthy and prominent attorney causes a change in direction for each of the Strand family members. Beyond that, the book explores so many questions that remain today - elitism, the wealthy bending of rules, gratitude versus resentment, loneliness, isolation, racism, fear of death, in essence, the human condition. I was so taken with the Strand family, with the power wielded by Russell Hazen, that could alter events both positively and negatively. I basked in the weekends in the Hamptons, shuddered at the dreary Connecticut boys school, was saddened at the loss of the stately NYC apartment, suffered and was elated by event after event. I laughed, I cried, and I appreciated every written word. I'm so glad to have found this genuine, timely piece of fiction.
I had read both The Young Lions and Rich Man Poor Man decades ago, so I had reason to expect a crisply written if soapy, but entertaining, novel. Wrong. Bread Upon the Waters is the bloated, cautionary tale of the effect a bloated influential lawyer has on the several members of the modest Strand family when they meet by chance one night. He affects all of the Strands, and ultimately not for the better. The dialogue is stilted, and the characters, particularly the lawyer and a student named Romano, are just not believable. They do not behave or talk like real people. Also not believable is how completely out of touch the protagonist is with the other members of his family. This novel is only for someone determined to read everything Irwin Shaw wrote.
Just finished this compelling novel yesterday. I read some of the reviews and found them credible, I can add that this story touched me in a rather personal way.
I was 2nd of four children in a family growing up in 1940-50's. We were the benefactors, but in a lesser way, of the generosity of an older couple who had no children. My father, at one point in his early working years, was an employee (insurance industry) of "Uncle Paul" who allowed his wife, "Aunt Maudie" to pay attention to us four children somewhat as if we were grandchildren to her. We received gifts when they returned from trips to Mexico. We were treated to concerts, restaurant meals and picnics as guests.
I felt very special because of this, even though we had two sets of grandparents already! The negative effects on our family didn't stand out, but I have no doubt there were some. Long story short, Uncle Paul was a local important figure (very small town) who had taken advantage of other people's misfortunes to create a large financial estate through shrewd purchases of distressed real estate. He was either loved or hated. Not much benefit to him or to Aunt Maudie. As I said, they had no children and Paul died much younger than expected. Without explanation, Paul didn't leave a will. Maudie spent a number of years, and made at least one local attorney quite wealthy, trying to sort out the mess that was Paul's estate. Oh, well. Complicated lives are intersting! I couldn't give the novel a 5 rating, due to some minor credibility issues. Russell Hazen's suicide is not well-developed. The curious relationship between Leslie Strand and Hazen seems like a real stretch! She was a sensitive woman, but quite smart and her despair after Hazen's death lacks authenticity. Whatever.
I bought this book because I remember it from my parent's library growing up. I have to say it is worthy read. It always amazes me how much more substantive was the writing from a few decades ago. The story is rich and the characters riveting. It is such a pleasure to read something that has not been dumbed down as the more contemporary books. Highly recommend it.
